Ethereum can’t seem to make up its mind. The world’s second-largest cryptocurrency was trading at $1,780.85 as of 6:15 a.m. ET on July 13, 2026, according to Fortune’s daily tracker — down $18.85 from the previous morning and roughly $1,192 lower than this time last year. Yet just a day earlier, ETH had punched above $1,800 for the first time in weeks.

That back-and-forth sums up where Ethereum sits right now: neither collapsing nor breaking out, but grinding against a resistance zone that has decided nearly every major move since June.

What’s Driving Ethereum’s Price Action This Week

Ethereum Price Holds at $1,780 as $1,800 Level Looms

Ethereum’s push toward $1,800 isn’t happening in a vacuum. It follows a genuine shift in institutional appetite, even if that shift is still fragile.

    • ETH gained roughly 2.7% over the week ending July 11
    • Spot Ethereum ETFs logged their first positive week after eight straight weeks of net redemptions
    • The rebound coincided with a double-bottom chart pattern that traders had been watching closely

ETF Flows Flip Positive After Eight-Week Slide

Spot Ethereum ETFs pulled in $84.42 million in net inflows for the week ending July 11, 2026 — the strongest weekly total since late April and the first green week after an eight-week outflow streak that had bled roughly $1.44 billion year-to-date. BlackRock’s ETHA fund alone added $29.74 million on July 2.

Part of the shift traces back to BlackRock’s staked Ethereum product, launched on March 12, 2026, which lets institutions collect native staking rewards through a regulated ETF wrapper instead of running validators themselves.

That structural change turns ETH from a pure price bet into a yield-bearing position — a detail fund managers have been citing as a reason to hold through weak spells rather than sell into them.

Whale Wallets Keep Buying Despite the Chop

Ethereum Price Holds at $1,780 as $1,800 Level Looms

While ETF investors were still nursing losses through most of June, large holders were doing the opposite. Blockchain trackers flagged a wallet linked to venture capital firm a16z withdrawing 25,560 ETH — worth more than $42 million — from Binance in late June, a move widely read as accumulation rather than routine transfer.

Analysts at CoinPedia noted that such on-chain withdrawals reduce exchange-available supply and have historically preceded periods of price stabilization, though they cautioned that a similar whale surge in February preceded a local top rather than a rally.

The Technical Picture Behind the Ethereum Price Standoff

Ethereum Price Holds at $1,780 as $1,800 Level Looms

Ethereum’s charts are sending conflicting signals, and that’s part of why $1,800 has become such a psychological battleground.

A weekly death cross — where the 50-week moving average slips below the 200-week average — confirmed on July 8, a bearish signal on paper. Prediction market Myriad priced roughly 72% odds that ETH touches $1,500 before it revisits $3,000, based on flow and sentiment data rather than the chart alone.

But death crosses on Ethereum have historically appeared near the end of bear phases rather than the middle, and Glassnode’s on-chain data shows long-term holders shifting back into accumulation mode after a prolonged distribution phase.

The Fear & Greed Index, meanwhile, sat around 26, still firmly in “Fear” territory even as price climbed.

Why the $1,800 Level Matters So Much Right Now

Ethereum Price Holds at $1,780 as $1,800 Level Looms

$1,800 isn’t an arbitrary number. It roughly lines up with Ethereum’s 50-day exponential moving average, a level technical traders treat as the dividing line between short-term weakness and a genuine trend shift.

A daily close above $1,801 would open the path toward the 100-day EMA near $1,960, according to CoinDCX’s latest forecast model. Fail to hold it, and ETH risks slipping back toward the $1,718–$1,750 support band that has capped rallies since June.

Traders are watching for three confirmations before calling a real reversal:

    • A second consecutive week of net ETF inflows
    • $1,500 holding on a weekly close alongside continued long-term-holder accumulation
    • Bitcoin reclaiming the $64,000–$65,000 resistance zone, which would support broader crypto strength

Ethereum’s Bigger Picture: Upgrades and Institutional Bets

Beyond the price chart, Ethereum’s fundamentals are quietly evolving. The network’s Glamsterdam upgrade — its first major base-layer throughput overhaul since the Merge — has been pushed to Q3 2026, with testing underway on public testnets.

Key changes include enshrined proposer-builder separation and a lift to the gas limit target of 200 million per block, aimed at enabling parallel transaction processing.

On the institutional front, a new nonprofit called Ethereum Institutional launched on July 1, 2026, led by former Ethereum Foundation staff and backed by BitMine, SharpLink, and co-founder Joe Lubin, positioned as a neutral contact point for institutions evaluating the network.

Ethereum still commands the largest share of DeFi total value locked, at roughly $45 billion, even as its overall market share has compressed to around 53–54%.

    What Analysts Are Watching Next

Ethereum’s story right now is one of tug-of-war institutional money cautiously returning through ETFs, whales buying the dip, and a bearish chart pattern that hasn’t been decisively disproven.

Bitmine chairman Tom Lee has tied part of the earlier drop to quarter-end fund rebalancing rather than fundamental weakness — a reminder that not every move has a structural cause.

For now, $1,800 remains the number to watch. Hold above it with confirmed ETF inflows, and Ethereum’s next leg could point toward $1,960. Lose it again, and the consolidation range that has defined the past two months isn’t done with ETH yet.
